In a 7-1 vote on June 4, the Board of Education adopted a $3.72 billion operating budget for fiscal year 2027, passing a plan that includes eliminating 415 supporting staff positions to balance the $36 million deficit. At-large board member Rita Montoya was the only one to cast a dissenting vote.
The finalized 415 position cuts are fewer than the original 435 full-time positions proposed by Superintendent Dr. Thomas Taylor on May 21. After significant backlash, Dr. Taylor switched some existing roles for around 159 unfilled vacancies, including eliminating 28 open security assistant positions.Â
This change allowed the district to restore critical, current staff categories that previously faced elimination. The specific positions saved include:
- 26 College and Career Navigators
- 18 School Psychologists
- 15 School Staff Development Teachers
While the restoration of these positions does help some staff and families, hundreds of other support roles remain cut. Social workers, special educators, English composition assistants, family engagement specialists, and media assistants are still facing job losses under the approved budget plan.
To limit further cuts, the county shifted financial pressure onto school infrastructure. The County Council redirected $36 million away from the six-year Capital Improvements plan to cover immediate operating costs.Â
This redirection creates a three-year delay on some elementary school modernization projects. Upgrades at the following schools will be pushed back to 2031, meaning construction will be delayed until around 2034:
- Burning Tree Elementary (Bethesda)
- Cold Spring Elementary (Potomac)
- Highland View Elementary (Silver Spring)
- Piney Branch Elementary (Takoma Park)
The Board of Education’s vote brings stressful weeks of public mobilization to a close. Although the immediate panic over job eliminations has quieted for those whose positions have been restored, many will still struggle. When MPCS reopens for the 26-27 school year, the community will have to learn to navigate a significantly altered environment with fewer supporting staff.Â
