Many students were surprised to see a Rockville City Police car parked in front of RHS. Some wondered how this change in police presence would affect the school community.
Rockville Police Corporal Steven Pascali joined RHS on May 7, serving as the Community Engagement Officer (CEO) for the Rockville Cluster, a position previously held by Officer Christopher Stuckey from the Montgomery County Police Department (MCPD). Students and staff greeted Pascali after school, eager to learn about his new role at RHS.
“I was surprised when I saw the [Rockville City] police car. I think it’s good for RHS to have a permanently assigned cop in order to make schools safer,” junior Amy Ayala said.
Pascali brings a wealth of experience in law enforcement, most recently serving as the CEO for Thomas S. Wootton High School. He previously served for 20 years with the MCPD, including as a school resource officer in several high schools.
“I understand how the schools operate,” Pascali said. “If I need to wear any other hats outside of the police hat, I will. Being a trusted adult, a mentor, somebody that has a roadmap through life.”
CEOs do not enforce school policies, the Student Code of Conduct, or handle student discipline. Rather, they provide additional security and can immediately respond to police incidents or emergencies on campus.
“I’m a teacher, friend, supporter, and so the school will need that,” Pascali said. “The school will need all hands on deck.”
Pascali wants everyone to know he is committed to the RHS community, and always around to lend a hand. He is usually available during the school day in his office (Room 1063). Students can also contact Cpl. Pascali through Administrative Secretary Beth Augustin.
“I plan to do this for the next six to seven years,” Pascali said. “Your culture is full of warmth and happy students. Everyone’s already calling me by name.”
