It’s March, and for sports fans, that means one thing: NCAA March Madness. The NCAA basketball tournament is one of the most exciting playoffs in sports, bringing together the best college teams for a single-elimination, seven-round battle to crown a champion.
The tournament begins with 68 teams. Thirty-one earn automatic bids by winning their conference tournaments, while 37 receive at-large bids selected by the committee using factors like NET ranking, strength of schedule, and head-to-head results. “Bubble teams” are those barely making the cut or just missing it.
Before the main bracket, eight teams compete in the “First Four” play-in games for the final spots. After that, 63 games remain, progressing through the Round of 32, Sweet 16, Elite Eight, Final Four, and National Championship.
Every year, millions of fans fill out brackets predicting every game. Despite an estimated 60–100 million brackets annually, no perfect bracket has ever been recorded—the odds are about 1 in 9.2 quintillion.
This year’s men’s tournament is headlined by four No. 1 seeds: Duke, Michigan, Arizona, and Florida. Duke enters as the top overall seed after a consistent season with multiple ranked wins. Michigan has been explosive offensively, topping 100 points several times. Arizona dominated early with a 24–0 start and finished strong, while Florida rebounded from an inconsistent start to earn a top seed.
One of the best parts of March Madness is the “Cinderella run,” when lower-seeded teams make unexpected deep runs. Historic examples include George Mason (2006), VCU (2011), and Saint Peter’s (2022). Upsets are especially common in certain matchups—No. 12 seeds beat No. 5 seeds about 35% of the time, while No. 11 seeds upset No. 6 seeds nearly 40% of the time.
When building a bracket, balance is key. Most higher seeds (1–4) advance early, so limit your upsets to a few smart picks. Teams that are hot, experienced, and strong defensively tend to go further. Champions are usually top seeds, so choosing wisely in later rounds matters most.
On the women’s side, the tournament is just as competitive. Powerhouse programs like the South Carolina Gamecocks women’s basketball, the UConn Huskies women’s basketball, and the LSU Tigers women’s basketball are expected to contend, with strong rosters and tournament experience. The women’s game has continued to grow in popularity, delivering high-level play and exciting matchups throughout March.
No matter who you pick, March Madness always delivers unpredictability, excitement, and unforgettable moments
