Nora Flynn is one of the brightest young stars in Rockville’s soccer program. As a freshman, Flynn is the starting goalkeeper for the varsity team. She’s played soccer since fourth grade and is ecstatic to continue her career on the pitch.
During summer scrimmages on junior varsity, Flynn took control of the game. She was able to dominate the ball on defense while also being able to play an attacking position as well.
“I found out I was on varsity when I was coming home, and I was with my sister, and we got very excited,” Flynn said. “Then I found out I was a starter when we went to get our jerseys, and the coach pulled me over, and he told me, and I was nervous.”

One of the best things that coach Franco Guevara had for Flynn was no presumptions. She came onto a varsity team with the coach reassuring her that it was OK to make mistakes.
“I didn’t have any expectations, and I think that’s a good part,” Guevara said…she definitely exceeded what our expectations were,” Guevara.
Flynn did not play goalkeeper before she joined the Rockville team.
“It’s tough because Nora initially didn’t want to play goalkeeper,” Guevara said.
Flynn usually plays defense, but due to an injury to the starting goalkeeper, sophomore Andrea Hernandez, Flynn had to step up to the role. Her teammates were a little surprised when they found out she’d be playing as a starter in the goalkeeper position.
“We didn’t expect Andrea to get hurt,” sophomore teammate Niamh Doherty said.
Flynn has been playing wonderfully through the first half of the season for the Rams. And now she will play other key parts on the defense, as the starting keeper has returned for the rest of the season.
“She plays almost the complete 80 minutes of the game,” Guevara said. But she’s definitely exceeded expectations.”
