Learn about the scope of people’s existence and what could lie beyond the universe at the Rockville High School Astronomy Club.
The Astronomy Club welcomes all students to attend a meeting if they are unsure about joining. However, they highly recommend sticking around.
“If you’re willing to learn something new about what’s beyond our planet, learn about the big scope of our existence, then definitely join,” Vice President Sasha Shchelochkov said.
The Astronomy Club was founded last year by then-senior Daniel Shchelochkov with the help of then-seniors Alex Emami and Christian Mijares. They brought up the idea of the club to physics teacher Jason Neal, who agreed to sponsor the club. This led to them creating presentations filled with information to share with other passionate students.
“Well, I have always had a great interest in space in general, and I firmly believe that high school is a great time to develop an interest in science and space,” Neal said.
This year, Neal wants to engage the community with more opportunities to hang out and observe stellar phenomena such as meteor showers.
“It’s going to be one of those things where we offer maybe some hot chocolate and the use of telescopes for people to come out,” Neal said.
The Astronomy Club is a community filled with people who share similar interests and are there for each other.
Though the club may be small, the size doesn’t hinder its sense of community.
“It shows me that there’s still people who are willing to continue this club,” Shchelochkov said.
