Varsity Basketball Team Loses Against Magruder

After quickly finding themselves down by ten points in the first quarter, the RHS varsity basketball team struggled to catch up with an athletic and well-rounded Magruder team, losing by a score of 70-50.

Throughout the first half, Rockville did not look like the same team that beat Springbrook HS earlier this week. Costly turnovers and a lack of rebounding were the two largest contributing factors that put the team in bad positon heading into the second half.

“We had a very slow start,” coach Steve Watson said. “We can’t afford to have those turnovers against a good team like Marguder.”

Rockville’s rebounding margin was significantly better in the Springbrook game where Rockville won by just one point scored by junior Essex Thompson with six seconds left in the game.

Junior point guard Ben Wiebusch who had 13 points on the night echoed his coach’s displeasure with the lack of rebounding.

“We need to execute our game plan and rebound better as team,” Wiebusch said.

Although the game was very one-sided, both of the student sections came out to support their schools with friendly cheers that developed into a competition to see who was the loudest.

With only three more games left in the regular season, Rockville looks to straighten out the kinks in their play as playoffs draw near.
