The annual powderpuff game at RHS is often full of excitement and intense competitiveness. It is a chance for the girls to display their athletic abilities and an opportunity for the boys to show their cheerleading potential along with raising money towards pancreatic cancer.

This year’s contest lived up to expectations with the seniors winning a close 14-7. Due to a wet field and poor playing conditions, the first half was mainly a defensive battle.

The senior defense was anchored well by Kelly McTighe Both teams were held scoreless up until the second quarter when McTighe scored the game’s first touchdown on an explosive run.

Shortly before the end of the first half, junior Samantha Bauer answered the seniors with a touchdown run of her own. Bauer was a key contributor to the juniors’ successful running game. The first half came to a close with a tied score of 7-7. After the second quarter scoring barrage, both offenses stalled.

Each drive by both teams was met by an interception or a goal line stand. This defensive intensity can be attributed to the coaching of senior Rajesh Sharma and junior Jack Berrigan. “I wanted us to be more aggressive on defense,” said Sharma.

That aggressiveness became most evident in one of the game’s most exciting plays. The junior offense was marching down the field looking to take the lead when senior defender Alexis Frager intercepted a pass from Olga Zhigunova and returned it for a touchdown, putting the seniors up 14-7. Frager’s touchdown proved to be the game-winner as both teams were held scoreless for the rest of the game.

Not only was this an exiciting game for both classes, but it went towards a good cause. Many underclassmen and fans came out especially to raise funds to find a cure for pancreatic cancer. “I am glad I was able to help support such a great cause,” said junior Vasilia Hangemanole.

As usual, the senior class continued their winning tradition in the annual powderpuff game. Although the seniors have a significant lead in the series, each game proves to be just as exciting as the last. If history is any indicator, next year’s game will most likely be just as thrilling.
