Two years removed from the 2016 Academy Awards that saw no minority representation sparking the social media outcry under #Oscarsowhite, the academy’s efforts to increase diversity were clear. “Coco,” the pixar-animated film heavily influenced by Mexican culture, won best animated film and best original song. Mexican immigrant Guillermo Del Toro won best director and best picture for his film “The Shape of Water.” The predominately African American race thriller, “Get Out,” brought home the Oscar for best original screenplay after being nominated in four categories.
