Boys varsity basketball (12-10) defeated the Westminster Owls (11-11) 53-37 at Thomas Johnson HS Feb. 28 to advance to the regional finals March 2.

The Rams’ strong offensive performance propelled the boys to victory. Junior forward Matt McTighe led the team with 11 points followed by freshman forward Jimmy Sorunke who had a double double, meaning he achieved double digits in two categories: 10 points and 11 rebounds. The boys kept the pressure on the Owls throughout the game, leading at the end of every quarter.

The boys have won their last four games, and won their last five home games; however, they will now have to play away for the rest of the season.

Having home court advantage is big, we talked about this as a team during the season,” head coach Todd Dembroski said. “We worked hard to get the no. 1 seed so we could have at least two home playoff games. We have great student and community support here and our fans help give us a big advantage.”

The last time the boys made a significant run in the playoffs was in 2014, when they lost to Wheaton 52-46 in the section finals. They will play against Thomas Johnson HS away March 2 at 7 p.m. in the regional finals. If they win that game they advance to the state semifinals at the University of Maryland.
