February 11, 2025, marked a historic date for women’s sports. The first-ever Women’s Lacrosse League game was played by the New York Charging vs. the Maryland Charm.
The Women’s Lacrosse League (WLL) was launched in November of 2024 by the Premier Lacrosse League, a professional men’s lacrosse league. The WLL debuted the league’s first games at the Championship Series, which featured the four WLL teams and the top four PLL teams. The league plays in the sixes format, featuring a smaller field, six-on-six play, and shorter quarters. This adheres to the Olympic style of play that will occur in the 2028 Olympics.
Though the WLL is not the first ever women’s lacrosse league, it is the biggest investment in women’s lacrosse to date and one of the newest additions of female leagues in the sports industry.
“I feel really great that women are getting the opportunities to play and show everyone the beautiful game of lacrosse,” senior girls lacrosse player Grace Litzenberg said.
The league features lacrosse stars like Charlotte North, a NCAA champion with Boston College, and Izzy Scane, the NCAA’s women’s goal record holder. The addition of the league is already having major impacts in the sports world, gaining attention from women across the country and inspiring female athletes everywhere.
“As a female athlete and a lacrosse player, even if I don’t want to play professionally myself, knowing there is a league for women to play is really fun to think about,” Litzenberg said.
Ultimately, the Boston Guard walked away victorious, winning the first-ever WLL championship. Due to this, fans are already supporting and being loyal to their home teams.
“I went to a game on Saturday, the 15th, to watch the Maryland Charm battle it out against the California Palms. I’ll definitely be a Maryland Charm fan for life, and I hope they win the championship next year,” Litzenberg said.
