Lucas Laender a senior athlete at Rockville High School has had his fair share of sports and physical activity.
He has been practicing jiu-jitsu since the age of 8 and continues to this day. He has also wrestled on the RHS team for two years. Now, he’s entering his third season but with a catch: an injury.
“I’m still gonna go to every practice and help my teammates [to] support the team,” Laender said.
Laender had his first injury to his knee over 2 years ago while competing in his first year of wrestling. He’s had two additional setbacks, but that did little to slow him down.
He also enjoys working out and lifting weights as well as fishing. Physical activity is also something that has not only brought him benefits physically but also given him a community. With both his main sports jujitsu and wrestling he has been able to find friends and make lasting bonds.
“It like, it’s not only the martial art itself but also the community and my instructors and my teammates,” Laender said.
Laender’s ability to overcome adversity is a lasting testament to not only him but also the students of Rockville High School as a whole.
“RHS is a great community, and everyone’s very welcoming and friendly, and I think RHS is a great place also to study. And RHS is just a great, great school overall,” Laender said.
