Sophomore Nellie Chung and her family are currently fostering her third foster sibling. This past month, they opened their home to a 9-month-old baby.
“I think the most important thing has been giving her love and giving her attention and just people to be around and help, you know, boost her for the coming years,” Chung said.
She and her family first found fostering as a way to give back and help the community. Chung describes her experience fostering as not only gratifying, but eye-opening to see the things people go through.
“I just feel really good to be able to, you know, that my family can help someone and help a family and even, like, reunite them because we did that with our first one,” Chung said.
Although the process took a year and a half, Chung is happy they were able to successfully reunite her first foster sibling with their family. She also feels fostering has overall enhanced her empathy immensely.
“Just being able, knowing that you helped someone, it really changes your perspective on life and certain topics,” Chung said. “And I think it goes a lot deeper than just, you know, oh I gave this person a home.”
