Boys' Soccer Falls 0-1 to ChurchillBy Benji Waite
Opening their season Monday September 8, the RHS boy’s soccer team played a tough first game against Walt Whitman High School, losing by a score of 1-0 in a double overtime period.
The RHS boys soccer team came into the game as an obvious underdog, but put forth a good effort none the less. The Whitman Vikings had a lot of experience and talent, having made the regional semifinals last season which proved to give them an edge in two overtimes. The Vikings team also has a history of success winning a state championship for boy’s soccer in 2000.
The key players for the RHS boy’s were senior Alex Sagastume, freshman Marshall Hamilton and senior Adam Shirazi along with goalie Rene Martinez in his first year playing on the RHS team. RHS senior David Vences said, “Rene played really well in probably one of our hardest games of the season.”
The RHS boy’s had strong plays on defense, including a stop right before the half ended. Chances to score on multiple occasions by both Hamilton and Akondi Mba were not capitalized on. Marshall shot and hit the crossbar while Mba missed an open goal during the game.
Shirazi said, “Our experience in the preseason really showed up in our game against Whitman.” RHS boys scrimmaged multiple high schools in the preseason
including the Richard Montgomery Rockets, the Sherwood Warriors, The Heights Cavaliers, and the Wootton Patriots. RHS won half of the games including a 1-0 victory over Richard Montgomery and a 2-1 win over The Heights. RHS tied both Sherwood and Wootton high schools.
The RHS boy’s soccer team is heavy with both experience and seniors, most of which played for the RHS junior varsity and varsity teams for all four years of high school. This experience has led to increased success over the years. The team has a history of success in past seasons, advancing to games in both the regional tournament and the Maryland state tournament.
Vences said, “We should catch a break for our second game against Einstein, they’re a lot worse than Whitman.” The RHS boys play Albert Einstein High School Saturday September 13. Despite problems in past seasons with ineligility conflicts, the players are very optimistic for a successful season. With the season just underway, the boy’s have a long way to go with 12 games left to play on their schedule.
